untold
what is untold
Untold is an innovative mobile application designed to enhance the art appreciation experience by integrating augmented reality (AR) technology. This app serves as an intelligent scanner that allows users to analyze and gain insights into art pieces effortlessly. With a focus on accessibility and education, Untold aims to bridge the gap between art enthusiasts and the intricate details of various artworks.
problem
The lack of a comprehensive understanding of artistic exhibits in museums poses a significant challenge, as visitors often struggle to interpret and appreciate the meaning behind artworks, highlighting the need for an app that provides accessible and informative content to enhance art comprehension and engagement.

design decisions
When conceptualizing the AR application for art comprehension, the primary audience in focus comprises individuals aged 25-44 who appreciate museum visits.
In light of this demographic, three fundamental design decisions have been carefully determined.
limited color palette
clean, simple design
low steps
design exploration
iteration : one
The first draft was what I was working on for a long time. I wanted to try to incorporate the old time and fancy feeling of being at an art museum. I was able to achieve this with a elegant typeface and an old royal color palette. The problem I was running into is it is boring. One of the goals for this app is to get people engaged with the art, and while the design is nice to look at it is not engaging. Aspects of this design are used in the final, that being the feature that zooms into the piece so the viewer gets a better view of what is being talked about.
iteration : two
The second draft went in the complete opposite direction. With this design I wanted to do something very professional and less stylized. I included some onboarding and added a scanning feature. The problem was it is too professional. It felt too professional, and really leaned into the educational aspect, rather than a mix of engaging and educational. If this apps purpose is to get people to go to museums then this design missed the mark. Aspects that were used in the final are similar onboarding designs and user flow.

why
it’s easy…
Untold facilitates a seamless user experience by enabling simultaneous scanning and reading on a single interface. This design choice ensures that users remain immersed in the museum environment, minimizing the intrusion of mobile devices. Additionally, this feature provides users with precise visual cues, allowing them to identify the specific section of the artwork being highlighted in real time.
